Background: HBO Independent Productions is a production company of HBO, established in 1990 to produce sitcoms for broadcast and basic cable television.

1st Logo (Early-Late 1991)

Nicknames: "The Circle", "IND"

Logo: On a white background, we see "IND" surrounded by a red circle, along with "HBO" vertically tilted at its upper left and "productions" at its lower right, following the path of the circle. FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: None or the end theme of the show.

Availability: Rare. Last seen on early season 1 episodes of Roc on TV One.

Scare Factor: Low.

2nd Logo (Late 1991-2006)

Nicknames: "The (UV) Light", "UV Light of Doom", "IND II", "HIP"

Logo: Here are the four standard variants of this logo:

  • 1991-1992 We see a wall with a light on top, along with a white board with the same logo from the previous. A hand reaches up and pulls a switch to an ultraviolet light bulb (or "blacklight"), causing the white area to turn blue-violet, and the logo to glow reddish-purple. The lights then flicker off to black at the end, followed by a black screen with "A TIME WARNER COMPANY" in white lettering fading in.
  • 1992-1993: Nearly the same as the original 1991 version, but the byline "a division of Home Box Office" is shown at the bottom left end of the screen, which was added. The byline is cut out, leaving a black screen.
  • 1993-1996: Nearly the same as the 1992 logo, only "HIP" took place of "IND", adding "ind" with the word "productions" on the lower right. The byline reads "A DIVISION OF HOME BOX OFFICE" in the same font as the 1992 byline and now in capitals on the bottom right.
  • 1996-2006: On a white background, we see the white board with the red HBO logo surrounded by "INDEPENDENT PRODUCTIONS" with "A TIME WARNER ENTERTAINMENT COMPANY" below. The logo turns into an ultraviolet light bulb (or "blacklight"), causing the white area to turn blue-violet, and the logo to glow reddish-purple. The lights then flicker off to black at the end, like the 1991, 1992 and 1993 versions.

Variants:*In extremely rare instances, after completely cutting to black and holding out for at least half a second longer than the original 1991-1992 version, the 1993-1996 version would read "A TIME WARNER ENTERTAINMENT COMPANY" in a bolder white text in the center of the screen (also for about a half-second. longer than the original 1991-1992 version).

  • There is also a long version of the 1996 logo. It's nearly the same as the original versions, expect with the HBO Independent Productions logo and the Time Warner Entertanment byline instead of the IND/HIP logos and the HBO byline, then cut to the animation from the 1996 logo.

FX/SFX: Mostly live action.

  • Late 1991-1997: An acoustically reverbed clicking noise, followed by an electric "hissing"-type sound and a light buzz.
  • 1996-2006: Just an electric "hissing"-type noise and a sound of a light buzz.

Availability: Common. The 1992, 1993 and 1996 (long) versions appears on Martin on TV One and MTV2. The 1991, 1992 and 1993 versions are last seen on Roc on TV One, and the 1996 version appears on Everybody Loves Raymond reruns on TBS, TV Land, and in local syndication and on early Lucky Louie episodes on the HBO networks and DVD. The HIP version also appears on later episodes of The Ben Stiller Show, You So Crazy on HBO Comedy and DVD.

Scare Factor: Low to medium, depending on your opinion on the electric sounds.

3rd Logo (2006-2007)

Nickname: "The Grass", "The Grass Square"

Logo: On a white BG, we see a square of grass with the bottom right corner rounded off. Some little white flowers bloom in the bottom left corner and form the HBO logo. The words "INDEPENDENT" with a much smaller "PRODUCTIONS" below it to the left also grow in a similar fashion. The square turns a solid bright green.

FX/SFX: The grass, the flowers blooming into the HBO logo, the appearance of the text below, the square turning solid green.

Music/Sounds: The sounds of children laughing, a dog barking, and other "outdoor" sounds.

Availability: Rare. Appeared on Lucky Louie on the HBO networks and DVD.

Scare Factor: None.
