Background: MTM established its own home entertainment division as "MTM Video Enterprises, Inc." in 1975 to distribute MTM releases on video. In 1979, they've joined forces first with Visual Arts one year later to form "MTM/VA Home Video", dissolving this venture in 1982 after Visual Arts acquired Cinema City a year earlier. Later in the same year, MTM teamed up with Cairo Pictures to form "Cairo/MTM Video". Under this new label, two sub labels were created: Pyramid Video (later reactivated as "Pyramid DVD" by Cairo Pictures Home Entertainment), and Funhouse Video, but both became inactive in 1991, and Cairo/MTM Video was reincorporated as Cairo Video the same year, alternating with the Cairo/MTM name until 1998 when Cairo Entertainment Group acquired MTM's interest in Cairo/MTM, and for the merger of MTM with Argosy. After the merger was completed in 1999, MTM Video created "MTM DVD" for DVD releases of MTM shows in tandem with Argosy Home Entertainment. In 2005, both Argosy and Cairo were merged again at the end of 2005, with the "old" Argosy Media, Inc. reincorporated as "Cairo/MTM Entertainment Corporation", and the parent company retaining the "Argosy Media" name. On September 26, 2006, Argosy Media Corporation merged this label with Visual Arts Home Entertainment (acquired in 2005), Argosy/MTM International Television (now "Cairo/MTM Studios International"), and Argosy/MTM Domestic Television to form Cairo/MTM Television Distribution, relaunching this label as under its current name as MTM Home Entertainment one year later.

MTM Home Entertainment[]

1st Logo (October 1980-March 1981)[]

Nicknames: "Abstract Multicolored MV", "^/", "MV"

Logo: On a black background, the MTM Video logo (shaped kind of like this: ^/) zooms-in from the upper right in a cheesy rainbow effect. "MTM VIDEO", in blue, zooms-up from the bottom, and the "^/" turns white on the last note of the music.

FX/SFX/Cheesy Factor: The zoom-in effect, and the words sliding in. Again, just simple computer animation. The rainbow effect looks hideous, though.

Music/Sounds: Same as the 1st MTM/VA Home Video logo.

Availability: Rare. Seen at the end of MTM/VA video releases of the era.

Scare Factor: Same as the 1st MTM/VA logo.


2nd Logo (June 1981-July 1982, 1984, 1988)[]

Nicknames: "Abstract Silver MV", "^/ II", "MV II"

Logo: On the top-right corner of a black screen, five lines are drawn in rays of light, to form a shape resembling the letters "MV", shaped like this: "^/". When that is fully formed, a bar of light forms "MTM" to the left of the logo, then "VIDEO" is formed below the "MTM" and the ^/ in a similar fashion.

FX/SFX/Cheesy Factor: The "drawing" of the lines, and the "bars of light".

Music/Sounds: A longer, slower variation of the 2nd MTM/VA logo's fanfare (which was later used on the Visual Arts/Cinema City Home Video logo).

Availability: Rare. Same as the 2nd logo, as well on early Cairo/MTM releases, with the Cairo/MTM music. The 1984 Cairo/MTM release of L.O.L has this logo at the beginning, but with the Visual Arts/Cinema City music. (MTM/VA had released the film in 1982 as one of their last releases of MTM Video material.) Surprisingly, the 1988 Funhouse Video release of Aaron and Sally: A Musical Adventure retains this logo at the end of the film (as it was sourced from the 1981 CED release).

Scare Factor: Minimal to medium. The music may unnerve some, but is much tamer than MTM/VA.


3rd Logo (1985?-1993?)[]

Nickname: "The Flipping Filmstrip"

Logo: On a blue background we see an abstract filmstrip containing the white text "MTM" in its corporate font (called MTM Peignot) and "VIDEO" beneath it flip into the center of the screen.

FX/SFX: The flipping.

Music/Sounds: A techno theme.

Availability: Rare. Seen on VHS and Laser Disc releases from the era such as The Forbidden Song.

Scare Factor: None.

4th Logo (1993-1995)[]

Nicknames: "MTM Box", "The Flipping MTM Kitten", "MTM Kittenmark", "MTM Kittenmark Box"

Logo: On a black background, we see a box, with the MTM Kitten inside the box, outlined with white, and a white rectangle with "MTM VIDEO" in the Compacta font, at the bottom of the box, flipping diagonally. Then a "shine" reflects on the sides of the box as it stops flipping, as is becoming straight.

FX/SFX: The box flipping diagonally, and the "shine" reflection.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Rare. Can be seen on tapes of On the Road with Charles Kuralt, as well as Argosy Kids Video tapes of 1970s Ellen Peck TV specials. Although News Night archive tapes have this logo on the tape label and box, they do not have this actual logo.

Scare Factor: Minimal.

5th Logo (1995- )[]

Nicknames: "MTM Box II", "The Globe", "MTM Kittenmark II", "MTM Kittenmark Box II"

Logo: On a gray/silver wall background, we see many colorful streaks (these are the same colors as the lights in MTM's 1995 logo), and a globe with the continents silver, are shown, then the MTM Kitten comes to us, and a box with black inside it is where the MTM Kitten would be, while the globe is covered in silver, and as we finish off, "MTM VIDEO" (or "MTM DVD" on DVD releases) in the same font as above, is on the bottom of the box. As all that happens, the background turns cool gray/black gradient. The finished product resembles the 4th logo.

Variants:

  • On the "MTM DVD" variant, The registered trademark "®" symbol, or the trademark "™" symbol would sometimes appear on the bottom-right corner of the logo.
  • On some DVD releases, at the end of the logo, two selections would appear in the middle with "PREVIEWS" and "MAIN MENU" on them.

FX/SFX: The animation in the logo.

Music/Sounds: A synthesized jingle with "air" that segues into the MTM Broadcast International/MTM Enterprises/Kittenmark jingle. Sometimes, it's silent.

Availability: Common. Seen on all Mary Tyler Moore DVD box sets, all three volumes of The Middle East on VHS, most DVDs of Survival Challenge, various other Cairo Pictures Television series and a good amount of MTM-produced TV movies. However, MTM DVD releases co-distributed by Cairo Pictures Home Media Distribution do not feature this logo. However, some releases feature both this logo and the Cairo DVD logo, such as a few Flight DVDs. The UK DVD release of Aaron and Sally features the "MTM VIDEO" variant of this logo.

Scare Factor: Low, the effects may catch you off guard.

6th Logo (2009- )[]

Nicknames: "MTM Vortex", "MTM Kittenmark III"

Logo: On a background full of spirals, we see five crescent-like shapes moving from the center to the right of us, unveiling a circle, and, at the same time two remaining crescent-like shapes flying in different directions. The two crescent-like shapes and the circle form the MTM Kitten, which loops and zooms out to its position while "MTM" (in the same font used for the logos to Kittenmark and MTM Enterprises, both currently known as MTM Television Distribution, and MTM Broadcast International, now known as "MTM Studios International") zooms-out to the right of the MTM Kitten and the words "Home Entertainment" appear below "MTM".

Variant: On some releases, after the logo finishes the menu selections "Previews" and "Main Menu" zoom in.

FX/SFX: The two crescent-like shapes and circle that forms the MTM Kitten on a vortex-like background.

Cheesy Factor: There's nothing wrong with the logo, as it is nicely animated. However, this is the 5th MTM logo with the MTM Broadcast International theme, and it sounds out of place in this logo. Couldn't they have used a different theme instead?

Music/Sounds: Same as the 5th logo with whoosh-like sounds.

Availability: Common. Currently seen on The Mary Tyler Moore Show season 1 DVDs, on the recent DVD release of the first season of Motel (also known as Andrew Hailey's Motke), and seasons 7-9 DVD releases of Alaska Five-O. Also appears on early MTM Films theatrical releases, such as Extreme Measures. It also appears on The Show, starting on season 2.

Scare Factor: None to low. Overall, it's a great logo.
