Rising Sun Films Company (旭日影业) is a company from Hong Kong specialising in filmmaking. Founded by the Cantonese filmmaker Wang Youzheng, (王友政) it is a company that specialises in making action, spaghetti western, and comedy films. The company only lasted for more than a decade and closed its doors in 1994.


1st logo

(1975-1981)

Rising Sun '75


Nicknames: "Rising Sun I", "The Rising Sun".

Logo: We see a background where there is a cloudy night sky background that is above the ocean. But then, all of a sudden, the sun appears and rises from below, glimmers through the ocean, and thus changes the background from navy to orange. Then a black dot appears and draws a "R". However, a green "S" appears and zooms into one of the corners of the "R." Then the Chinese words "旭日影业 (Rising Sun Films)" appear, followed by the English text.

FX/SFX: The sun zooming, and 2D animation.

Music/Sounds: A majestic fanfare.

Cheesy Factor: Medium.

Availability: Seen on "Jailbreak", "The Vengeance of the Silenced Fool", "The Man who defeated an army of a Thousand Men". Also seen on various comedy and western films during the time period.

(1981-1985)

Rising Sun '81

Nicknames: "The Rising Sun II", "The Samuel Goldwyn Company's Distant Cousin"

Logo: Over a navy background, a white dot splits into two white dots. One of them transforms to the letter "R", and one of them transforms into the letter "S". The two letters merge, thus forming the logo. A few seconds later, the text "Rising Sun Films" appears, both in Chinese and English respectively.

FX/SFX: Outdated CEL animation, even for the 80s.

Music/Sounds: A tone consists of 3 drum chimes, followed by a violin theme, and a trumpet fanfare that ends with a gong.

Cheesy factor: Very high.

Availabilty: Seen on comedy, action, and western films made by the company during the time period.

3rd logo

(1985-1989)

Nicknames: "Rising Sun III", "Orange and Yellow Rising Sun", "Fu Ngai Film Production Co. Ltd.'s Older Brother"

Logo: Over a black background, a yellow "R" slides from the left into the center of the screen. Then, an orange "S" zooms into the yellow "R" with a trailing effect. Later on, the orange "S" flashes for 5 seconds, thus forming the "RS" symbol. A few seconds later, the symbol zooms out to make room for the text. Then, the text "Rising Sun Films", both in Chinese and English, coloured both in orange and yellow respectively, zooms into the bottom of the logo with a golden-coloured trailing effect. Then the Chinese/English text flashes for another 5 seconds until it stops, thus forming the logo.

Music/Sounds: A synth tune, followed by whooshes, then followed by a bombastic fanfare.

Availability: Seen on the action, comedy, and spaghetti western films during the time period.

Rising Sun '86

Nicknames: "Rising Sun IV", "Golden Rising Sun", "Rising Sun in Space", "The Rising Sun Filmreel"

Logo: Over a black-blue space background, a filmreel appears and transforms into a golden "R" symbol as the screen zooms further into the center of the logo, and after that, the logo stops for a few seconds until below the symbol, the golden text "Rising Sun Films Company", both written simultaneously in Cantonese and English, appears.

FX/SFX: CGI animation fitting for the time period.

Variant:

  • During the company's later releases, the space background is changed into black, and the "R" symbol is changed into solid orange, along with the text.

Music/Sounds: None, sometimes a majestic synth tune.

Availabity: Seen on the last films produced by the company during the time period. Also seen on "Devil Vendetta", and "The Great Bank Heist".

Editor's Note: In the year 1994, the company closed its doors, and it disappeared without leaving a single trace. However, its movies were still popular amongst the people who live on Hong Kong, and when the company was shat down, it made the people who live there upset.
